Battlefield 2042 developer DICE seems to be learning the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” lesson in a bit. After making a lot of changes to the series’ formula with last year’s shooter, the team has spent all this year not only fixing the game, but now making it more like the old games.

“in Battlefield 2042 “You’ll see us leaning back on previous games and how they might play out in the world of 2042,” said Senior Producer Ryan MacArthur in Season 5. Roadmap blog post (Opens in a new tab).

Season 4 is set to drop in late December 2022, while Season 5 will kick off in the new year in early 2023. According to DICE, it will see “a mix of veteran developers alongside those working on their first game as it breathes new life.” [into Battlefield 2042]. “

A key part of this is the return of Classes, a classic feature of the series that was stripped from Battlefield 2042 and replaced with Specialists: characters with unique abilities that don’t fit their class roles. With Update 3.2, DICE is assigning all existing Specialists “specific roles with a combination of tools and equipment that best suit their purpose on the battlefield,” MacArthur wrote.

Another Specialist is coming with Season 4, and DICE plans to add them to the Recon class. With Back to Seasons and our roster of 14 in total, we’re thrilled with the amount of Specialists and the variety of gameplay they’ll let you experience.

“So our focus will continue to be listening to your feedback in order to expand Protection in other ways by introducing design and balance changes for class-based combat, along with continuing to expand on skins and cosmetics to give you even more ways to stand out on the battlefield.”

In addition to the Ultimate Specialist, the next update brings a new map that MacArthur describes as “smaller, shorter, and linear designed for the close-up and personal combat that Battlefield is known for.”

While MacArthur reserves minor details about Season 5, he does say that “The upcoming new Season 5 map will be a forgotten battlefield that saw the fighting of the Battlefield 4 era. An overgrown area overgrown with vegetation and by the war of 2042. Encourage the combination of vehicular and infantry combat which means Team play is the key to victory.”

We can look forward to that in 2023.
