On Tuesday, the Apple CEO joined President Biden and Arizona officials, at a televised event at the site where TSMC is building a semiconductor-based manufacturing plant slated to open in 2024. As Apple expands its relationship with TSMC, the new plant will begin producing Apple Silicon in the United States.
In 2021, TSMC initially announced that it would invest $12 billion in a manufacturing plant. At an event on Tuesday, TSMC announced that it would raise its investment to $40 billion which represents a second manufacturing plant where it will put 3nm chips into production when it opens in 2026. The first manufacturing plant will produce 4nm chips starting in 2024. Tim Cook says that chips for many Apple products will be produced at the Phoenix plant and that “thanks to the hard work of a lot of people […] These chips can be proudly stamped: “Made in America”.
